this angers me beyond words. they were in a recognized training area. they were there to assist the very people who killed them. whoever was flying that f-16 should be courtmarshalled, at the very least. drawn & quartered sounds a lot better to me right now.
maybe it’s because the soldiers who died were part of the same regiment as my uncle. maybe it’s because it’s the first time in fifty years that a canadian soldier had died during an offensive mission. maybe it’s because the bomb which killed them belonged to the u.s. maybe it’s because it is a perfect example of why weapons of mass destruction are so fucking frightening… one mistake. that’s all it takes. regardless of why, i feel sick when i think of it.

9 Thoughts on “friendly fire

  1. the first thing i was going to tell you today was congratulations on the game last night. and then i heard this. it makes me want to cry. somehow it’s worse that we hit canadians than if we hit our own troops. i’m sorry, kiddo. i don’t know what else to say.

  2. I actually thought the same thing when I heard about it, redsugar. In a sick and twisted way, it makes it worse that the dumbass didn’t drop a bomb on his fellow soldiers instead of the Canadians.
Not that any of it is ok.

  3. it makes me sick too, heather. it’s just so stupid and unnecessary…

    friendly fire, very dire,
    four dead Canadians, in afghanistan.
Sgt. Marc Leger, Cpl. Ainsworth Dyer, Pte. Nathan Smith and Pte. Richard Green
if looks could kill they probably will,
in games without frontiers, war without tears.

  5. i feel the same…this so called investigation that’s going to happen is just going to be all talk…nothing will happen ;(

  6. Exactly. What the hell will Canada do if they say…”oh well, accidents happen”?

  7. Good question.

  8. seriously! at least until somebody thinks to tell the pilots “oh, and don’t bomb the canadians” before they take off. criminy.

I find it interesting that while we lose people a lot, nobody in the rest of the world cares an ounce. Then, four Canadians (the nationality of my Mother) die, Canadians go NUTS. Rightly so, mind you, but what’s the difference? Canadian? Israeli? Senegali? Burmese? Malaysian? Why the hell do we kill AT ALL?
Because there are EVIL PEOPLE that don’t understand it any other way.
Being a former Military Man, I am fairly confident that those four men that died did so knowing that their job was inherently dangerous. They don’t draft people in Canada, do they? It’s sad, but it’s not the end of the world.
We have militaries for one reason; to kill. They’re not construction batallions, or singing telegram deliverers. They’re killing machines. Until this world can’t live without war (which, I’m sorry to say, never will happen), we will continue to have to send off our brave young men to fight wars. We’re an evil lot, us humans. We like to think that we’re better than the other tribe, and to prove it, we’ll kill them.
I’m sad for them, as I am for ALL soldiers that get killed or injured in any situation.
