well, at least the US’s reluctance to support the kyoto protocol makes sense now… i hope you didn’t want children or to grow old without cancer or anything silly like that. :)

and personally, if my countrry had ‘elected’ george dubya bush, i’d be lying low and trying not to draw too much attention to the fact i’m american for a while. 0:)

To be honest I don’t know the details about the Kyoto Protocol and whether or not it would be a good thing for the US to support. So I can’t comment on that. But I can say that Bush hasn’t done anything to embarrass or discredit himself thus far and is changing the minds of many people who had assumed that he was stupid just because the liberal media reported that he was. He said that he was going to lower our taxes and after being in office for 6 months we are getting a refund AND (the media seems to forget to report this part of it) lower tax percentages when we file at the end of the year which will saves everyone across the board money.

Well, from what I’ve read about the Kyoto protocol today, there isn’t even a set agenda on how they plan on implementing their plan to reduce the CO2 emissions along with the other stuff. And apparently the US isn’t the only country that has a problem with it. Why would the US commit to something that is incomplete? That would be like signing your name to a llegal contract that isn’t finished. And the US is still engaged in talks with the Kyoto people, it’s not like it’s over.
Ya know, only a hand full of scientists believe that we have caused the hole in the ozone. The majority of them believe that it is a natural occurence. And the looming temperature change of the earth I find hilarious. We’ve only been recording temperature for 100 years. Not to mention we only recently have been able to measure temperature to the one hundredth of a degree. Do they actually think this is an accurate gauge to use to determine the temperature cycle of a planet that is millions of years old?

  17. um…its like REALLY hot outside

it’s just common bloody sense that all the crap we put into the atmosphere, oceans and soil is BAD for the global ecosystem. you can’t possibly believe that the smoke belching from factories and automobiles is GOOD for the planet, can you?
bush won’t sign an emissions agreement because he knows that his big, polluting lobbyists will pull the plug on their funding should he hope to try to run again in three and a half years. he’s the ex-governor of the oil state!! if he signs this, he’s fundamentally saying “fuck you” to all the oil barons who put him in office.

  19. Goddess on August 1, 2001 at 13:49 said:

No, I don’t think that pollution is good for the environment but I don’t think signing an incomplete Kyoto thing is the answer. It’s not like the Kyoto has any answers in it anyway. We all know pollution is bad and that’s pretty much as far as they have gotten with it.
No matter what I say you will believe what you hear about Bush so I won’t bother.

i don’t believe he’ll ever do anything that will risk funding for his re-election bid or threaten his relationship with big business, no.
otherwise, i’m more than willing to listen to any arguments you think will persuade me to think of him as less of a yokel. =)

argh. damnit. stop making me be serious. :P
    ok, several points…
    (1) when i talk about dubya being a particularly dire choice for american president, i’m referring mostly to his record as a governor. if you really want to know about tax savings and the effects they’ll have on an otherwise bouyant economy, i really suggest you go read about his record as governor of texas. i made an informed opinion after reading a LOT of material. i respect that you might have your own opinions. if you really want to argue details, email me, i’d be happy to. :)
    (2) actually, bush commissioned a report on the kyoto protocol, by a committee he put together, and the conclusion of that report was very much that something drastic needed to be done, and soon. it did indeed question aspects of the kyoto protocol, but, in fact, concluded that the kyoto protocol was the way forward.
    (3) last week, every country except the US got on board with the kyoto protocol, though it has been drastically revised (and weakened) to get countries like australia and japan on board, who were previously reluctant because of the US’s reluctance. obviously, reducing co2 pollution is an expensive process – for a lot of countries, there’s the worry that the US, by not signing up, will have an incredible competitive advantage.
    (4) this is about global responsibility. the US produces one quarter of the world’s co2 pollution. but it isn’t just americans who are suffering because of it – it’s the world and. in particular, as ever, it’s third world countries that are getting shafted. your (and every other) nation’s pollution is killing people, thousands of people. the truth is, bush knows it would be political suicide to put his name to any contract committing him to the reduction of pollution levels, because every american would be up in arms screaming about their rights, and never mind the right of other people to be able to work in the sun all day and not be riddled with terminal skin cancer by the time they’re 16. and george w bush has said as much.
    (5) the kyoto protocol doesn’t just say “pollution is bad”. it’s a commitment to reduce co2 emissions to predetermined levels by a predetermined date.
    (6) bush’s administration’s excuses for not joining up with the kyoto protocol change monthly, as each previous excuse is rubbished. the worst is suggesting that the kyoto protocol is flawed and thus we shouldn’t get on board with it – bollocks. that’s like saying chemotherapy doesn’t necessarily stop cancer so i’m just going to live with my brain tumour, because anyway, not all brain tumours are fatal, some just have side effects like leaving me deaf, blind and retarded.
    sheesh.
