my current obsession is with selecting the pieces for my new computer. i’ve driven jeremy almost totally insane with my hemming and hawing and general indecision. unfortunately for him, that’s how i make major purchase decisions. i drive myself crazy comparing and researching until one i day i can’t take it any more and just go out and buy something.
not that any of you (other than a select geeky few) care, these are the specs for my new system:
– nci 18″ atx 350w case with front usb ports
– soltek 75frn2-l nforce2 socket a dual ddr agp 8x motherboard
– amd xp 2500+ 333fsb barton cpu
– 512mb ddr 333 pc-2700 infineon ram
– msi 884 gf4 ti4200-vtd 8x 128mb video card
– panasonic 1.44 floppy drive
– maxtor 80gb 7200 rpm ata 133 hard drive
i’m giddy and frightened. i don’t really need it and can’t really afford it, but i really, really want it, so i’m going to get it.
just for curiosity’s sake why does it always cost me $800 to upgrade?

  1. Don’t see an optical drive there… Transferring old one?
Are you playing huge 3D games? A lot? That’s way more video card than I’d ever use.
AMD. Good choice. I wouldn’t go that fast personally. My 700 Mhz AMD works beautifully.
The old adage of buying more than you need because you’ll use it eventually isn’t really all that true anymore. I have three computers that are all under 900 Mhz with 32 meg 3D cards and 128 megs of RAM and I have no intention of upgrading for the next two years.

  2. The only suggestion/question I have is this: are you getting a rear USB card installed as well? If not, I would highly recommend at least 4, if not 6 rear ports for all of those things that you don’t move often (ie. printers, mice, webcams) and two front ports for those things that you only plug in occasionally (ie. digital cameras, PDAs that you update or sync once in a while and can store the cords away). I’ve just discovered that it’s a cord management nightmare otherwise, and some hardware is really finicky with being plugged in and unplugged over and over again to make room for other peripherals. *phew* /end rant.

that sounds well cool. as memory serves me there were some performance issues with the early bartons, but at least your memory is taking advantage of the fsb. like Dana, i ask: do you really need a gf4 ti4200 8x 128mb card? you might(?) be able to save some $ there without a noticeable drop in performance for your needs (unless you are closet ut2003 f33Nd?). and are you sure 350W is enough juice for all that powerhungry ‘ware? still at only CN$800 it seems like a good deal to me!

  4. *sigh* And there goes my Hessie in ’04 visit campaign. :(
Ah, well, enjoy your toys! :)
